The Star of the Air and the Breath of Life
"Hau i te rangi, hau i te whenua." (The wind in the sky, the wind on the earth.)
🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Messenger of the Sky
Ururangi is the star connected to the winds—the Hau. He determines the nature of the winds for the year ahead. Will they be gentle breezes (hau maiangi) that help the gardens grow, or fierce gales (tūpuhi) that test the strength of the trees? In the legend of Matariki, Ururangi is a reminder of the unseen forces of nature. We cannot see the wind, but we can see its effects everywhere we look.
🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Moving Energy
The wind does more than just blow our hats off! It carries seeds to new places, clears away old leaves, and provides energy through wind turbines.
-
In the Classroom: Talk about the different names for winds in Te Reo Māori (like the North Wind, Hau Raki).
-
Cultural Insight: The wind is often seen as a messenger. When the wind blows, it is said to be carrying the voices of our ancestors or the breath of the Atua.
💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity
The Invisible Artist:
-
Go outside with a piece of ribbon or a light scarf. Hold it up and see which direction Ururangi is blowing today.
-
Look at the trees—are they "dancing" or "shaking"?
-
The Goal: To understand that even things we cannot see (like the wind or our own feelings) have a very real impact on the world around us.
