Haumiatiketike: The Guardian of Wild Food

The Atua of Uncultivated Foods and Fernroot

🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Hidden Survivor

Haumiatiketike is the Atua of foods that grow wild in the forest and swamps, especially the Aruhe (fernroot). When Tāwhirimātea attacked the brothers, Haumiatiketike and Rongomātāne were hidden inside Papatūānuku by their mother to keep them safe. He represents the resilience of nature and the food that is always there for us, even if we didn't plant it ourselves.

🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Foraging and Survival

He teaches us to look closer at the world. Food isn't just in a supermarket; it is all around us in the wild.

  • In the Classroom: Discuss "Wild Foods"—like blackberries, watercress, or traditional fernroots.

  • Nature Link: Talk about how plants survive in the wild without anyone watering them.

💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity

The Wild Scavenger Hunt:
  1. Go for a walk and look for plants that weren't planted by a person (weeds, wild grass, moss).

  2. The Goal: Realize that nature provides for itself. Can you find a plant that is "strong" enough to grow through a crack in the pavement?
