Rūaumoko: The Guardian of the Underground

Rūaumoko: The Guardian of the Underground

The Atua of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Seasons

🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Unborn Son

Rūaumoko is the youngest son of Rangi and Papa. He remained inside his mother’s womb when they were separated. When he moves or turns over, the ground shakes—this is how we experience earthquakes. He is the guardian of the fire and heat deep within the earth.

🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Geothermal Energy

Rūaumoko is the power behind New Zealand's volcanoes and hot springs. He also helps stir the earth to change the seasons.

  • In the Classroom: Discuss why the ground moves. We live on Rūaumoko’s playground!

  • Science Link: Talk about "Tectonic Plates" and how the earth is always shifting.

💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity

The Tremor Test:

  1. Place a bowl of water on a table and have everyone jump at once. Watch the ripples.

  2. The Goal: This is a tiny version of Rūaumoko’s power. Talk about your school’s earthquake safety drill.
