Hine-ihorangi: The Lady of the Rain

Hine-ihorangi: The Lady of the Rain

The Cleanser of the Atmosphere and the Soft Mist

🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Sky’s Tears

Hine-ihorangi is the Atua of the rain and the moisture in the air. She works between Ranginui (Sky) and Papatūānuku (Earth) to ensure the land never goes thirsty. She is the one who washes the dust from the leaves and fills the streams.

🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Hydration and Growth

Without her, the forests of Tāne would wither. She teaches us about the importance of being "clean" and refreshed.

  • In the Classroom: Discuss the Water Cycle.

  • Health Link: Talk about why we need to drink water to keep our "inner gardens" growing.

💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity

The Rain Dance:

  1. Use your fingers to tap on your desk or the floor—slowly at first, then faster and faster like a rainstorm.

  2. The Goal: Quietly say "Thank you, Hine-ihorangi" for the water that helps our food grow.
