Hine-i-tapeka: The Guardian of Underground Fire

The Lady of Geothermal Heat and Volcanic Power

🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Hidden Fire

Hine-i-tapeka is the sister of Mahuika (the fire goddess). While Mahuika’s fire is on the surface (in wood), Hine-i-tapeka’s fire is hidden deep underground. She is the source of the heat that makes geysers bubble and volcanoes roar. She hid her fire under the earth to keep it safe from the floods of the rain gods.

🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Earth’s Core and Resilience

She represents the "heat" within the earth and within ourselves. Even when it’s cold outside, there is warmth deep down.

  • In the Classroom: Discuss Geology (Magma and Tectonic plates).

  • Science Link: Talk about Rotorua’s hot springs and mud pools—that’s Hine-i-tapeka saying hello!

💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity

The Warm Core:

  1. Hold a warm cup of water (not too hot!) or a warm stone.

  2. The Goal: Imagine that heat coming from deep inside the earth. How does it feel?
