The Mother of Humanity and the Breath of Life
🌿 The Pillar of Legend: Created from Clay
Hine-ahu-one was the very first woman. She was not born; she was fashioned by Tāne Mahuta from the sacred red clay at Kurawaka (the "pubic area" of the Earth Mother). Tāne breathed life into her nostrils, and she became the first human to sneeze—“Tihei Mauri Ora!” (The sneeze of life).
🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Physical Identity
She represents our physical connection to the land. Because we are made from the earth, we are part of it.
-
In the Classroom: This is a great way to discuss Genetics and Ancestry. We all carry a piece of the earth within us.
-
Cultural Insight: The Hongi (pressing noses) is a direct reference to Tāne giving the breath of life to Hine-ahu-one.
💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity
The Clay Creation:
-
Use some modeling clay or playdough to "fashion" a small person or a handprint.
-
The Goal: Think about one physical trait you are proud of. Did you get your fast legs from the earth? Your strong hands?
