The Star of the Great Salt Sea
🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Guardian of the Tides
Waitā is the star that governs the Moana (the ocean). While his sister Waitī looks after the small streams, Waitā looks after the vast, deep blue. He is the protector of all sea life, from the smallest pipi in the sand to the giant Parāoa (Sperm Whale). In the legend of Matariki, Waitā represents the balance of the tides and the immense power of the salt water that surrounds our island nation of Aotearoa.
🔍 The Pillar of Connection: The Great Blue Highway
For the early Polynesian navigators, the ocean wasn't a barrier; it was a highway. Waitā reminds us of our history as voyagers and our responsibility to the sea.
-
In the Classroom: Talk about the importance of Kaimoana (seafood) and the traditional rules (Rāhui) used to make sure we don't take too many fish.
-
Science Link: Discuss the problem of plastic in the ocean. How can we help Waitā keep his home clean for the dolphins and fish?
💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity
The "Ocean Treasure" Sorting:
-
If you can’t get to the beach, imagine you are walking along the shore after a big storm.
-
What "gifts" has Waitā left behind? (Shells, seaweed, driftwood). Now, what "rubbish" has the wind blown in? (Plastic, nets, bottles).
-
The Goal: Create a poster showing three ways your class can reduce plastic waste to help Waitā stay healthy.
