The Star of Dreams, Goals, and the Future
"E hiwa, e hiwa! Hiwa-i-te-rangi!" (Shine, shine! Star of the heavens!)
🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Promise of Tomorrow
Hiwa-i-te-rangi is the youngest star in the cluster and perhaps the most exciting for children. She is the "Wishing Star." Unlike the other stars that look at what we have (food, water, wind), Hiwa looks at what we want to become. Māori would send their desires and dreams for the coming year to Hiwa, believing that she had the power to help those dreams take root and grow.
🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Growth and Intent
Hiwa-i-te-rangi represents our potential. Just as a seed has everything it needs to become a giant Kauri tree, every child has the potential to achieve great things.
-
In the Classroom: This star is all about "Growth Mindset." It’s not just about wishing; it’s about setting a path to get there.
-
Cultural Insight: This is a time for Aspirations. What does our school want to achieve this year? How can we be better friends or better kaitiaki?
💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity
The Hiwa-i-te-rangi Wish-Tree:
-
Draw a star or a leaf on a piece of paper. On one side, write a wish for yourself. On the other, write a wish for someone else in your class.
-
Hang these on a "classroom tree" or a wall display.
-
The Goal: To realize that our "wishes" are most powerful when they include helping others.
