Pōhutukawa: The Star of Memory

Pōhutukawa: The Star of Memory

The Star of Those Who Have Passed

"Kua whetūrangitia koe." (You have now become a star.)

🌿 The Pillar of Legend: The Bridge to the Heavens

Pōhutukawa holds a very sacred place in the cluster. She is the star that connects us to our ancestors (tūpuna) and those we have lost since the last Matariki rising. Māori believe that when people pass away, their spirits travel to the northernmost tip of New Zealand (Te Rerenga Wairua) and then take their place in the sky as stars. Pōhutukawa is the guardian who carries these spirits and keeps their memories alive for us here on Earth.

🔍 The Pillar of Connection: Trees and Time

While we often think of the Pōhutukawa tree blooming in summer, the star Pōhutukawa shines in winter. This reminds us that life has cycles—just as trees lose their leaves or change with the seasons, our lives have times of growth and times of letting go.

  • Cultural Insight: This star teaches us the importance of Tangihanga (mourning) and how sharing stories helps us heal.

  • Nature Link: The Pōhutukawa tree is known as the "Chiefly Tree" because it is strong and resilient, clinging to cliffs. Like the tree, our memories must hold on tight even when the winds are strong.

💡 The Pillar of Challenge: The "Ako" Activity

The "Story-Stone" Journal:

  1. Find a smooth stone or a piece of paper.

  2. Think of a story or a "funny moment" involving a grandparent or a loved one who is no longer here.

  3. The Goal: Write one word that describes that person. By speaking their name and sharing their story, you are helping Pōhutukawa keep their light shining bright.
